Mars and Big Idea Ventures Select 3 Startups for 2026 Next Gen Pet Food Program

Mars Petcare and Big Idea Ventures have selected three startups — EcoBean, Loopworm and Space Ark Biomedical — for the 2026 Next Generation Pet Food Program, highlighting the accelerating search for alternative proteins, upcycled ingredients and lower-impact raw materials for companion-animal nutrition.

The three companies were selected from 83 applications spanning 33 countries. The 2026 cohort is focused on technologies that can create new protein, fat and functional-ingredient sources while potentially reducing the environmental footprint of pet-food production.

EcoBean, based in Poland, is developing ingredients from spent coffee grounds. Loopworm is developing insect-derived ingredients, while Space Ark Biomedical is working with fermentation and upcycling technologies involving agricultural side streams such as okara and brewer’s spent grain.

Each selected startup receives a US$15,000 cash prize, technical and commercial support, access to R&D capabilities and opportunities to work with programme partners including AAK, Bühler, Givaudan and Ingredion. The cohort is expected to showcase its technologies later in 2026.

Strategic Significance

The programme illustrates a structural shift in pet food innovation. Alternative ingredients are moving beyond laboratory concepts toward commercially scalable proteins, fats and functional ingredients that can potentially enter mainstream formulations.

The reduction in applications compared with the previous programme is also notable: organisers received 83 applications in 2026 versus 165 in 2025, while applying stricter commercial-maturity criteria. That suggests the programme is increasingly focused on technologies closer to commercialisation rather than very early-stage concepts.

Analyst View

The strategic importance extends beyond sustainability. Large pet-food companies increasingly need new protein security, supply-chain resilience, cost competitiveness and differentiated nutritional functionality.

The Mars/Big Idea Ventures model provides startups with something that is often more valuable than capital alone: access to formulation expertise, industrial processing partners and potential commercial validation.

The next key indicators will be pilot-scale production, ingredient regulatory approvals, palatability and digestibility data, manufacturing economics and eventual adoption by major pet-food manufacturers.
