Taiwan Initiates First-Ever Heat-Tolerant Dairy Breeding Cattle Exports to the Philippines

TAIPEI, Taiwan — October 13, 2026 — Following two years of complex biosecurity negotiations and farm-gate sanitary audits, Taiwan’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Agency (APHIA) announced the official authorization of its first live breeding cattle export shipment to the Philippines. The trade deal marks a historical milestone in dairy genetics, introducing heat-adapted Holstein lines bred specifically to maintain high milk yields in humid, tropical environments.

Dismantling Climate Barriers in Tropical Dairy Production

Holsteins traditionally suffer severe heat stress in Southeast Asian climates, leading to sharp declines in conception rates, feed intake, and milk production. By selectively breeding Holsteins over decades to thrive in southern Taiwan’s hot and humid conditions, the Livestock Research Institute solved a foundational productivity barrier. In addition to live animal shipments, Taiwan plans to export proprietary automated herd management equipment and robotic milking infrastructure to support the Philippines’ dairy modernization drive.
