NEW YORK, N.Y. — New York-based synthetic biology pioneer Neion Bio has announced a strategic partnership with animal health intelligence company Barnwell Bio to deploy advanced avian biosurveillance technology across Neion’s production flocks. Under the agreement, Barnwell Bio will continuously track the health, environmental dynamics, and microbial ecosystems of Neion’s flocks as the company scales its proprietary Raptor™ biomanufacturing platform.

The alliance addresses a fundamental shift in how biological medicines are produced. Rather than relying on traditional multi-story steel fermentation tanks, Neion Bio precision-engineers laying hens to express complex recombinant proteins—including monoclonal antibodies, enzymes, and therapeutic fusion proteins—directly inside egg whites.
By trading stainless steel bioreactors for living avian systems, Neion shifts the core operational paradigm of pharmaceutical manufacturing: flock health directly becomes a primary manufacturing variable. In a conventional biopharmaceutical plant, a microbial contamination event occurs inside a closed batch vessel; in Neion’s model, a contamination event occurs inside a barn.
Re-Engineering Biomanufacturing: The Living Bioreactor Paradigm
Traditional bioprocessing relies heavily on energy-intensive, capital-heavy infrastructure. Stainless steel bioreactors require massive capital expenditures, complex sterilisations, and long lead times to expand capacity.
Neion’s Raptor™ platform bypasses these industrial bottlenecks by harnessing nature’s most efficient protein production mechanism: the chicken egg. A single standard egg naturally contains roughly six grams of complex functional proteins. Using next-generation genome editing and stem cell biology, Neion replaces native egg proteins with high-value therapeutic biomolecules running on basic agricultural inputs like grain and water.
However, shifting upstream production to biological hosts introduces unique risk parameters that require population-level management.
Distributed Redundancy vs. Flock Health Risk
Neion argues that living bioreactors deliver intrinsic supply chain resilience that traditional steel infrastructure cannot match.
“One of the advantages of the Raptor platform is that it can create a level of redundancy in biologics manufacturing that is difficult to achieve with traditional bioprocessing. We are not dependent on a single large bioreactor or manufacturing site. At the same time, the health of the flock remains critically important to the productivity and reliability of the system,” explained Dimi Kellari, co-founder and CEO of Neion Bio, in an exclusive conversation with SynBioBeta.
Because production is distributed across modular agricultural units, losing a single barn or sub-flock does not compromise an entire drug pipeline in the way a contaminated 20,000-liter bioreactor vat halts supply. Nevertheless, ensuring batch-to-batch consistency and high therapeutic yields requires real-time, non-invasive health intelligence at the facility level.
Metagenomic Biosurveillance: Decoding the Barn Microbiome
To safeguard its living factories, Neion partnered with Barnwell Bio, an animal health intelligence startup whose founders previously helped scale national COVID-19 wastewater surveillance infrastructure.
Barnwell operates at the population level rather than running diagnostic assays on individual birds. Instead of screening for a short list of pre-selected target pathogens, Barnwell collects and sequences environmental samples—including air streams, dust, and waste runoff—leveraging high-throughput metagenomic sequencing to map the entire microbial ecosystem inside the facility.
By processing hundreds of thousands of genomic data points, Barnwell generates a dynamic “microbiome fingerprint” for each production barn. This baseline allows algorithms to detect subtle shifts in pathogen density long before animals demonstrate physical symptoms.
“We have been able to find unusual pathogen loads in the environment weeks ahead of clinical signs,” stated Michael Rhys, co-founder and CEO of Barnwell Bio.
