Recent US animal-health surveillance continues to show H5N1 activity across commercial and backyard poultry, reinforcing the need for sustained biosecurity as the industry approaches another high-risk migration period.
Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 remains an important animal-health and poultry-sector risk in the United States, with recent detections involving commercial poultry operations in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Michigan and Indiana.
A September 16 report from dvm360 said approximately 10 million birds had been affected during the preceding 30-day period and highlighted several large commercial events, including an 870,000-bird table-egg layer operation in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, a 354,100-bird pullet operation in Cecil County, Maryland, a 51,700-bird turkey operation in Kent County, Michigan, and a 7,600-bird commercial duck operation in Indiana.
Commercial poultry remains the primary economic exposure
Large layer, pullet, turkey and duck operations remain particularly exposed because a single confirmed detection can result in the depopulation of very large numbers of birds.
The economic impact extends beyond the directly affected flock. Outbreaks can disrupt:
