Alveo Technologies and Royal GD Expand Partnership to Advance Rapid Point-of-Need Molecular Livestock Diagnostics

ALMERE, NETHERLANDS & ALAMEDA, CA — Biotechnology leader Alveo Technologies, Inc. and Dutch veterinary diagnostic authority Royal GD announced a major expansion of their joint R&D and commercial partnership. The agreement transitions their validated point-of-need molecular diagnostic platform beyond poultry to include swine and bovine livestock health.

The expansion builds upon 18 months of real-world commercial success with the Alveo Sense™ Poultry Avian Influenza Test. Royal GD will commit new research and development resources to expedite multi-species pathogen detection cartridges, with commercial rollouts targeting 2027.

Expanding Species Targets & Disease Focus

Under the expanded partnership agreement, Royal GD and Alveo will co-develop molecular diagnostic panels across four high-priority veterinary sectors:

  1. Swine Pathogens: Early field detection of economic driver diseases, including Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRSV) and African Swine Fever (ASF) vectors.

  2. Cattle Pathogens: Rapid diagnostic screens targeting Bovine Respiratory Disease (BRD) complex pathogens and viral enteric diseases.

  3. Respiratory Diseases: Multi-pathogen, broad-spectrum respiratory panels to facilitate targeted antimicrobial stewardship on livestock farms.

  4. Expanded Avian Portfolio: Additional poultry disease assays to support Differentiating Infected from Vaccinated Animals (DIVA) vaccination strategies.

Strategic Significance: A Paradigm Shift in Production Animal Medicine

The partnership accelerates a fundamental operational evolution within the livestock production industry:

By bringing lab-grade nucleic acid amplification technology (Isothermal/PCR-equivalent direct electrical sensing) directly to the barn door, farm managers and veterinarians reduce result lead times from days to under 60 minutes.

For hyper-contagious diseases like Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), PRRS, and BRD, a 48-hour delay in diagnosis can result in mass flock culling, severe mortality, or unnecessary mass-medication with broad-spectrum antibiotics. Rapid on-site confirmation enables immediate biosecurity isolation and precise clinical interventions.
