Irish agritech startup Micron Agritech announced a major double milestone in veterinary diagnostics: its AI-driven platform has officially catalogued and detected over 100 million parasite eggs across global livestock operations, and the company is officially expanding its rapid point-of-care testing ecosystem into the companion animal sector.

The expansion brings rapid, 10-minute diagnostic testing for dogs and cats directly to companion animal practices, alongside automated Faecal Egg Count Reduction Test (FECRT) reporting designed to combat growing anti-parasitic drug resistance.

Scaling Point-of-Care Diagnostics to Pets
Originally developed to eliminate prophylactic anthelmintic overuse in livestock, the Micron Kit utilizes a patented centrifugal flotation process, reusable testing slides, and an AI-powered optical smartphone reader.
The companion animal roll-out adapts these machine-learning algorithms to detect common feline and canine intestinal parasites—including Toxocara, Ancylostoma (hookworms), and Trichuris vulpis (whipworms)—without requiring samples to be sent to external reference laboratories.
Addressing Anthelmintic Resistance & Practice Efficiency
Veterinary professionals face increasing rates of anti-parasitic treatment failures in dogs and cats, driven by routine, non-targeted administration of deworming medications.
By integrating automated pre- and post-treatment FECRT tracking directly into the Micron Analytics dashboard, veterinary teams can instantly assess whether a prescribed deworming regimen succeeded, flagging potential resistant strains in real time.
