A significant fresh Indian animal-health development is the confirmation of Classical Swine Fever (CSF) among pigs in Car Nicobar following several weeks of pig mortality.

Samples collected by the Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services were tested at designated laboratories on the mainland and confirmed CSF.

Authorities have moved to strengthen surveillance, vaccination, reporting and biosecurity. Farmers have also been advised against moving, selling or slaughtering sick or suspected pigs and against moving potentially contaminated equipment or carcasses without veterinary permission.

India significance

This is particularly important because pig production in island ecosystems presents distinctive disease-control challenges. Movement restrictions, carcass disposal, vaccination coverage and rapid laboratory confirmation become critical when veterinary access and animal movement routes are geographically constrained.
