Comparative Microbiome Study Uncovers Early-Life Interventions for Bovine Respiratory Disease

AMES, Iowa — A landmark comparative microbiome study published by veterinary immunologists has mapped the early-life nasopharyngeal bacterial development of commercial beef and dairy calves, identifying critical developmental windows for preventing Bovine Respiratory Disease (BRD) complex.

BRD remains the leading cause of economic loss and antimicrobial use in feedlots worldwide. The study tracked calves from birth through weaning, using high-throughput 16S rRNA gene sequencing to monitor how viral challenges (such as BRSV and Bovine Parainfluenza-3) disrupt healthy commensal bacterial
communities in the upper respiratory tract.

“We discovered that calves establishing high early-life populations of protective *Lactobacillus* and *Mycoplasma* commensals display significantly higher resilience against secondary bacterial pathogens like *Mannheimia haemolytica*,” reported lead researchers.

The findings pave the way for novel intranasal biotherapeutic spray applications and targeted probiotic therapies administered during colostrum feeding, reducing dependence on parenteral antibiotics during feedlot entry.

KEY CLINICAL FINDINGS
First 14 days of life identified as the foundational window for calf upper respiratory microbiome assembly.

Disruption of commensal stability by early viral infection directly correlates with severe BRD presentation. Supports development of targeted intranasal microbial therapeutics for feedlot receiving protocols.
