Global Poultry Producers Evaluate Field Efficacy of Avian Metapneumovirus (aMPV) Vaccination Strategies

ATLANTA, Georgia — Commercial turkey and broiler breeder operations across North America and Western Europe have convened technical panels to address field protection gaps against emerging Avian Metapneumovirus (aMPV) subtypes A, B, and C.

Following increased incidence of swollen head syndrome (SHS) in chickens and severe upper respiratory tract infection in commercial turkeys, veterinary teams are evaluating whether legacy modified-live vaccines provide adequate heterologous cross-protection against recent wild-type lineage shifts.

“aMPV causes significant egg drop production losses in breeders and predisposes broilers to secondary *E. coli* septicemia,” noted senior poultry technical consultants. “Customizing autogenous and recombinant vaccine programs to match regional field strains is top priority.”

Industry associations are urging flock managers to strengthen barn ventilation standards, optimize biosecurity protocols, and utilize quantitative RT-PCR diagnostic panels to differentiate aMPV from Infectious Bronchitis Virus (IBV) and Newcastle Disease.

FIELD ACTION ITEMS

Systematic screening for aMPV subtypes A, B, and C across high-density poultry corridors. Evaluation of dual-vaccination regimes combining live primer sprays with inactivated booster emulsions.

Focus on managing air quality and ammonia levels to minimize mucosal epithelial damage.
