Merck Launches Next-Generation Rabies Vaccines for Dogs and Cats in the United States

Merck Animal Health introduces new rabies vaccine options for companion-animal veterinarians

RAHWAY, New Jersey, 2 November 2026 — Merck Animal Health has announced the US availability of NOBIVAC NXT 1-Rabies and NOBIVAC NXT 3-Rabies, expanding its companion-animal vaccine portfolio with next-generation rabies prevention options for dogs and cats.

The vaccines are intended for healthy dogs and cats aged 12 weeks and older. According to the company’s announcement, the portfolio provides one-year and three-year rabies protection options, with the three-year product offering that duration of immunity after a repeat dose.

The products are built on Merck’s NOBIVAC NXT platform and are described as non-adjuvanted, preservative-free, antibiotic-free and thimerosal-free. They are administered in a 0.5 mL dose. The company positions these features as an effort to combine established rabies protection with an improved vaccination experience for veterinary teams and their patients.

Why the launch matters

Rabies remains a major One Health concern because infected mammals can transmit the virus to humans, and clinical rabies is almost invariably fatal. Vaccination of dogs and cats is a central component of prevention, alongside surveillance, responsible animal management and prompt post-exposure medical care.

For veterinary practices, a differentiated vaccine platform can provide another option when discussing preventive-care schedules with pet owners. The availability of one-year and three-year formulations also creates opportunities to align vaccination programmes with applicable product labels and local legal requirements.

However, the duration of immunity specified by the product does not override state or local rabies vaccination laws. Veterinarians must follow the approved label and jurisdiction-specific requirements.

Competitive and commercial implications

The launch strengthens Merck’s position in the companion-animal preventive-care market. Commercial adoption will depend on veterinary confidence, distribution, pricing, clinic protocols and the ability to demonstrate value relative to existing rabies vaccines.

The announcement does not disclose initial sales forecasts, pricing, market-share targets or expected revenue contribution. Those measures will be needed to assess the launch’s financial impact.

Industry takeaway

Merck’s latest rabies vaccine launch illustrates continued innovation in a mature but essential veterinary vaccine category, where product differentiation and adherence to preventive-care schedules remain commercially and clinically important.
