Global Animal Health Funding Gap Threatens Food Supply Pipelines in India

NEW DELHI — Industry analysts have raised alarm bells over a widening global funding gap in animal healthcare services, warning that the financial deficit threatens foundational food security pipelines worldwide. The transboundary deficit is putting pressure on critical agricultural supply chains, with major agrarian economies like India standing directly in the crosshairs of potential disease disruptions.

According to recent data from the Deccan Herald, the economic stakes of this crisis are heavily concentrated in developing farming communities. In India, a massive population of approximately 536 million livestock serves as a critical economic safety net, sustaining roughly 16% of total farm household incomes. The country’s massive dairy infrastructure—which recorded a monumental 247.87 million tonnes of milk production in 2024–2025—directly supports over 80 million smallholder and marginal farmers who rely on animal health services to protect their primary livelihoods.

Veterinary experts stress that because pathogens do not respect national borders, regional underfunding rapidly evolves into global vulnerability. Past outbreaks, such as the rapid transboundary spread of Lumpy Skin Disease from Bangladesh into India, underscore how easily operational deficits can trigger cascading supply chain failures. As public and private funding pipelines shrink, analysts warn that failing to adequately resource global animal health services risks reversing multi-decade gains in undernourishment reduction and food security across Southern Asia.
