Pet Fair Asia 2026 Closes at Record Scale as China’s “Pet Economy” Accelerates

The 28th Pet Fair Asia, held in Shanghai from August 19–23, has concluded after setting new records for exhibition scale and international participation, underscoring the growing importance of China as a global pet-care market and manufacturing hub.

The five-day event covered approximately 320,000 square metres, bringing together more than 2,600 exhibitors across pet food, healthcare, veterinary products, supplies, technology and services. Official exhibition data put attendance at around 130,000 trade visitors and 390,000 consumers.

Post-event reporting indicates that overseas visitors from 102 countries and regions increased 23% year on year, while consumer attendance on the public days exceeded 400,000.

China’s “Cute Pet Economy” Moves Beyond Pet Food

The strongest signal from Pet Fair Asia 2026 was the continued expansion of China’s “meng chong” (萌宠), or cute-pet economy, from basic pet ownership into a broader consumer ecosystem.

Products showcased across the exhibition included:

  • Functional and premium pet foods

  • Pet healthcare and veterinary products

  • Supplements and functional treats

  • Smart feeders and drinking systems

  • Automated litter systems

  • Companion and monitoring technologies

  • Grooming and lifestyle products

  • Pet fashion and accessories

The shift is strategically important: pet spending is increasingly moving from basic maintenance toward preventive health, convenience, enrichment and human–pet lifestyle integration.

The exhibition also featured dedicated areas for imported premium products, cat lifestyles and human–pet living, while more than 500 new products were highlighted through the show’s Discovery Zone.

China’s Pet Market Is Becoming a Global Growth Platform

The event coincided with estimates that China’s pet economy has surpassed RMB300 billion. A China Business News report published following the exhibition put the market at RMB312.6 billion, with projections of approximately RMB400 billion by 2028.

The increasingly international character of Pet Fair Asia also demonstrates that China is becoming more than a manufacturing base for global pet brands.

It is increasingly a consumer market, innovation market and distribution platform in its own right.

International participation included exhibitors and country pavilions from markets including New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, the United States, Poland, Canada and Thailand.

Core Market Shifts

  • Rise of Domestic Brands: Local innovators like PETKIT, CATLINK, Rosy Fresh, and Myfoodie stood shoulder-to-shoulder with global giants, showcasing advanced digital integration and scientific formulation
  • High-Tech and Specialized Care: Strong consumer emphasis centered on smart pet devices, functional senior-pet nutrition, and specialized veterinary healthcare
  • Supply Chain Expansion: The co-located sourcing platform, Pet Fair Asia SUPPLY, expanded significantly to cover 70,000 square meters, underscoring upstream manufacturing and OEM/ODM capabilities

Strategic Signal for the Global Animal-Health Industry

For animal-health companies, perhaps the most important development is the increasing convergence of pet nutrition, preventive healthcare, veterinary medicine, diagnostics, technology and wellness.

China’s pet market is moving toward a more sophisticated model in which owners increasingly spend on products intended not merely to treat disease, but to support long-term health and quality of life.

That creates opportunities for international companies in:

veterinary pharmaceuticals → diagnostics → supplements → functional nutrition → preventive healthcare → digital pet health.

The participation of major companies from outside traditional pet-industry categories also signals that the sector is attracting cross-industry capital and strategic entrants, rather than remaining a niche consumer market.

Bottom Line

Pet Fair Asia 2026 was more than a large trade exhibition. It provided a real-time snapshot of China’s rapidly professionalising pet economy.

With 320,000+ sq m of exhibition space, 2,600+ exhibitors, 102 international markets represented among overseas visitors and more than 400,000 public-day visitors, the event reinforces Shanghai’s position as a major global meeting point for the pet industry.

For global pet and animal-health companies, the message is increasingly clear: China is becoming a market to build in—not simply a market to sell into.
