African swine fever continues to impose substantial pressure on Vietnam’s pig industry, with the country recording 697 ASF outbreaks across 28 provinces and cities during the first half of 2026.

According to Ministry of Agriculture and Environment data reported by industry media, 96,134 pigs died or were culled, representing a 48.3% year-on-year increase. The number of outbreaks increased 59.5% year on year.

The disease pressure is particularly evident in smallholder production. In Nghe An province, authorities recorded 30 ASF outbreaks during 2026, with more than 7,300 pigs culled, according to provincial veterinary authorities.

Officials identified seasonal rainfall, flooding and rapid restocking by previously affected farms as factors increasing the risk of continued transmission. Small-scale and free-range production systems can further complicate disease control.

Despite the disease burden, Vietnam’s pig industry continued expanding during the first half of the year, with national pig production reaching approximately 2.86 million tonnes, up 4.8% year on year.

Strategic / Analyst View

Vietnam demonstrates a critical ASF paradox: production can continue expanding even while disease pressure rises.

This increases the importance of biosecurity and health-management systems that can support expansion without proportionally increasing disease risk.

The market opportunity encompasses ASF vaccination, molecular diagnostics, farm biosecurity, disinfection, surveillance, traceability, veterinary advisory services and digital farm-health monitoring.

The simultaneous expansion of commercial ASF vaccination — highlighted by AVAC’s recent Philippine shipment — makes Vietnam particularly important as both a disease-pressure market and a centre of ASF vaccine innovation.

For producers, the central challenge remains integrating vaccination where approved with biosecurity, movement management, early detection and disciplined restocking protocols.
