Blue Buffalo has launched an AI-powered dog-food comparison tool that allows consumers to photograph or upload an image of a dog-food package and receive a comparison with a corresponding Blue Buffalo Life Protection Formula recipe.
The tool uses Google’s Gemini multimodal AI model to identify the photographed product and match it with one of the company’s Life Protection Formula recipes. It can compare approximately 60 competing products.
Brands included in the comparison set include Purina, Purina Pro Plan, Hill’s, Iams, Royal Canin, Rachael Ray Nutrish and Pedigree.

From search to image-based shopping
The development illustrates how AI is changing pet-food purchasing behaviour. The conventional journey is:
Search → read label → compare products → decide
The AI-assisted journey becomes:
Photograph bag → AI recognition → product matching → ingredient/benefit comparison → purchase
Blue Buffalo is also attaching a commercial incentive to the experience, offering a rebate of up to $25 on qualifying purchases after consumers use the tool and upload their receipt.
Why this matters for animal health
Although the tool is a consumer-marketing application rather than a veterinary diagnostic system, the underlying technology has wider implications. Image recognition combined with product databases could eventually support:
-
Pet-food identification
-
Ingredient comparison
-
Diet-history capture
-
Feeding-plan management
-
Allergy-related information
-
Therapeutic-diet navigation
-
Supplement identification
