EHD Virus Detected in Wisconsin Dairy Cattle as Deer Deaths Exceed 1,800

Wisconsin is dealing with a significant outbreak of epizootic hemorrhagic disease (EHD) in white-tailed deer, with more than 1,800 suspected deer deaths reported across southeastern parts of the state. The virus has also been detected in non-lactating dairy cattle in Waukesha County.

The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection confirmed EHD virus in cattle samples collected in late September. Wildlife authorities have simultaneously documented substantial mortality among deer, particularly in Washington County.

EHD is transmitted by biting midges and is primarily recognised as a disease of wild ruminants. The detection in dairy cattle is therefore important from a livestock-surveillance perspective.

There is currently no specific treatment for EHD. Herd-health management focuses on supportive care and reducing additional stressors, including parasite burden, nutritional deficiencies and overcrowding.

Importantly, state authorities have said that EHD does not pose a human-health risk and is not considered a food-safety threat through milk or meat.

The larger industry lesson is the increasing importance of wildlife–livestock disease interfaces.

Climate, vector abundance, wildlife movement and livestock exposure are increasingly interconnected. That makes surveillance systems capable of integrating veterinary, wildlife and environmental data more valuable.

For animal-health companies, opportunities include vector monitoring, diagnostics, herd surveillance and digital disease intelligence.

Animal-health industry takeaway

The Wisconsin EHD event demonstrates why modern livestock-health systems increasingly need to monitor wildlife disease signals before they translate into livestock-health problems.
