US Pork Industry Invests $1.64 Million in Pig Livability Research

A new US$1.64 million Pig Livability Project is bringing together the Foundation for Food & Agriculture Research, Pork Checkoff and research partners to investigate the complex causes of pig mortality.

The programme includes approximately US$750,000 from FFAR, with the pork industry and other partners contributing another US$893,357.

Iowa State University is leading the project in collaboration with Kansas State University.

The research is focused on understanding why pigs die and identifying practical interventions that can improve survival, animal welfare and producer economics.

Importantly, the project does not treat mortality as a single-disease problem.

Pig livability can be influenced by genetics, early-life management, nutrition, housing, environmental conditions, disease pressure and individual animal resilience.

That makes the project strategically important for the animal-health industry.

Every percentage-point improvement in survival can potentially improve the economics of a production system, particularly when margins are under pressure.

The research may therefore create opportunities for technologies that combine genetics, diagnostics, nutrition, environmental monitoring and precision livestock management.

The development also reflects a broader shift in livestock production from simply treating disease to measuring and improving animal outcomes.

For pharmaceutical companies, this creates a challenge: the winning products increasingly need to demonstrate measurable effects on mortality, growth, feed efficiency or reproductive performance rather than relying solely on conventional health claims.

Animal-health industry takeaway

Pig livability is becoming an explicit investment category. Products that demonstrably reduce mortality and improve lifetime production efficiency are likely to command greater attention from producers and investors.
