US: Multistate Research Advances Livestock Reproductive Performance via AI and Genetics

A multidisciplinary research team involving scientists from 23 Land-grant universities has been recognised for advancing reproductive performance in cattle and sheep.

The programme has developed deep-learning algorithms for sperm biomarker detection, genetic tools for identifying delayed puberty and the Open Cow Test, which helps producers identify open cows and make earlier reproductive-management decisions.

USDA-NIFA reports that refinements to artificial-insemination protocols have increased pregnancy rates by as much as 27% in the programme’s reported applications. The researchers have also identified genetic traits relevant to heat tolerance and embryonic loss.

Precision Reproduction

Reproductive inefficiency represents a major source of lost productivity in livestock systems.

Technologies capable of identifying non-pregnant animals, delayed puberty or poor reproductive potential earlier in the production cycle can potentially reduce days open, unnecessary feeding costs and replacement expenses.

AI Moves Into Animal Breeding

The use of deep learning for sperm-biomarker detection is particularly significant.

It demonstrates how artificial intelligence is moving from administrative and imaging applications into animal breeding, fertility diagnostics and genetic selection.

Analyst View

The combination of genomics, reproductive diagnostics and AI could become a major component of precision livestock production.

The commercial opportunity is likely to centre on technologies that deliver an identifiable economic outcome — higher pregnancy rates, lower replacement costs or shorter calving intervals — rather than AI capability alone.
