ViGenCell Begins Korea’s First Regenerative Medicine Treatment With VT-EBV-N

South Korean cell-therapy company ViGenCell has begun patient treatment with VT-EBV-N, marking the country’s first treatment conducted under its advanced regenerative-medicine treatment framework. The therapy is being administered at Catholic University of Korea Yeouido St. Mary’s Hospital from September 1, 2026.

VT-EBV-N is an autologous EBV-specific cytotoxic T-cell therapy designed for patients with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-positive extranodal NK/T-cell lymphoma. The current program targets patients who have achieved complete remission but remain at high risk of relapse. Up to 15 patients are expected to receive treatment over a two-year period. ViGenCell is responsible for manufacturing and supplying the cell therapy.

The treatment plan was approved by South Korea’s Ministry of Health and Welfare in April 2026 and represents the first case under the advanced regenerative-medicine treatment system introduced in February 2025. Importantly, the program uses evidence generated through a commercial clinical trial to support treatment of eligible patients under the regulatory framework.

Animal-health relevance

The development is primarily a human oncology milestone, not a veterinary product launch. However, the underlying concept—using antigen-specific immune cells to maintain anti-tumour surveillance and reduce relapse risk—is potentially relevant to veterinary oncology research.

For the animal-health sector, the case illustrates how advanced human cell-therapy platforms could eventually inform canine lymphoma and other companion-animal cancer immunotherapies, although there is currently no evidence that VT-EBV-N itself is being developed for veterinary use.

Industry significance: ViGenCell’s program demonstrates the progression of personalised immune-cell therapies from clinical development toward controlled real-world treatment, while creating a technology benchmark that could influence future human and veterinary cancer immunotherapy.
