M&A | Animal Health Biotechnology | United States–United Kingdom | August–October 2026
BiomEdit has acquired the technology platform and pipeline assets of UK-based Folium Science, strengthening its precision microbiome capabilities and broadening its portfolio of biological solutions for animal health and nutrition. The transaction, announced few weeks ago, adds Folium’s CRISPR-Cas-based Guided Biotics® technology and its BiomElix® One poultry feed additive to BiomEdit’s existing veterinary-biologics platform.
An important distinction is that the transaction concerns Folium Science’s technology platform and pipeline assets, rather than a confirmed acquisition of the entire company as a corporate entity. BiomEdit and the reporting reviewed have not disclosed the financial terms.

Combining two complementary microbiome technologies
BiomEdit, headquartered in Indiana, develops genetically engineered bacterial biologics designed to perform targeted functions in animals. Its Programmable Veterinary Biologics™ platform focuses on engineering beneficial microorganisms to deliver specific biological activities that may address infectious disease, chronic conditions and sustainability challenges.
Folium Science brings a different but complementary approach through its Guided Biotics® platform. Based on CRISPR-Cas technology, the platform is designed to selectively target particular bacterial populations within the microbiome while preserving broader microbial communities.
The combination expands BiomEdit’s technological toolkit. Rather than relying exclusively on engineered beneficial bacteria, the company can also explore targeted modification of microbial populations associated with animal disease and production challenges.

The strategic logic is significant for animal health research. Microbiome interventions have traditionally faced challenges involving specificity, consistency and the complex interactions between microorganisms and their hosts. Technologies capable of targeting selected microbial populations could potentially offer more precise alternatives to broad-spectrum interventions in appropriate applications. However, their clinical and commercial value will depend on demonstrated safety, efficacy, regulatory acceptability and scalable manufacturing.
Poultry portfolio gains an approved Brazilian feed additive
The transaction also adds BiomElix One, a Folium-developed poultry feed additive approved by Brazil’s Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAPA). This provides BiomEdit with an existing approved product asset alongside the underlying technology platform.
BiomEdit’s own poultry programme, BE-101, is designed to prevent mortality associated with necrotic enteritis in broiler chickens. The company’s September 2026 corporate milestone update subsequently reported that BE-101 had received a USDA conditional licence. This is a material development beyond the earlier announcement describing the programme as being in the final stages of the conditional-licensure process.
The combined portfolio therefore spans both targeted microbial engineering and selective microbiome modification, with applications in poultry nutrition and disease prevention.
Strategic implications for the animal-health industry
The acquisition reflects a wider shift in animal health towards biological products that target specific disease mechanisms and microbial interactions. The approach is particularly relevant in livestock production, where the industry continues to explore alternatives to conventional antimicrobial strategies while maintaining productivity, animal welfare and disease control.
For BiomEdit, the transaction adds technological diversity, an approved feed-additive asset and opportunities to develop a broader product pipeline. For the sector, it signals continued strategic interest in microbiome biotechnology as a potential source of differentiated veterinary products.
The key commercial questions now concern product performance across production systems, regulatory expansion beyond existing approvals, manufacturing economics and the ability to convert advanced microbiome science into practical farm-level solutions.
The transaction is therefore best understood as a strategic technology and asset acquisition that expands BiomEdit’s development capabilities—not yet as evidence of a fully integrated global product platform or demonstrated commercial synergies.
