AgriZeroNZ Secures $117M Capital to Accelerate Methane-Reducing Additives and Livestock Genetics

WELLINGTON, New Zealand — AgriZeroNZ, the joint public-private entity driving New Zealand’s agricultural emissions-reduction pipeline, has secured an additional NZ$117 million (approx. US$65.7 million) in committed funding. The capital boost elevates the fund’s total portfolio capitalization to NZ$308 million, marking one of the largest single commitments to commercializing livestock climate-tech solutions globally.

The milestone funding round sees expanded backing from the New Zealand government alongside new equity investments from major agricultural co-operatives and processors, including meat processing giant Alliance Group and farm supply co-operative Farmlands. They join founding corporate shareholders such as Fonterra, ANZCO Foods, Rabobank, Ravensdown, Silver Fern Farms, and Synlait.

Since its launch in 2023, AgriZeroNZ has committed more than NZ$80 million across 21 high-impact research and technology ventures. The new capital will be used to fast-track field trials, regulatory approvals, and manufacturing scale-ups for tools designed to suppress enteric methane without harming animal welfare or milk and meat production yields.

Targeted Technologies: Vaccines, Inhibitors, Probiotics, and Breeding

The updated mandate prioritizes four main technology pillars engineered for pasture-based grazing systems, where daily hand-feeding of supplements is often impractical:

1. The Pursuit of an Anti-Methanogen Vaccine

Considered the “holy grail” for pasture-based livestock, a methane vaccine stimulates the animal’s immune system to produce antibodies in its saliva. When swallowed, these antibodies selectively target and inhibit Methanobrevibacter and other rumen microbes responsible for methane generation. AgriZeroNZ is working alongside research partners, including Lucidome Bio, to refine candidate antigens capable of delivering a minimum 20% methane reduction in sheep and cattle.

2. Next-Generation Feed Additives & Probiotics

AgriZeroNZ continues to co-fund bio-tech developments, such as US-based BiomEdit’s engineered probiotic platform. The targeted microbials are designed to displace methanogenic pathways in the rumen, with initial targets set at a 30% methane reduction, scaling toward 50% in future strains.

3. Low-Emissions Genetics

In collaboration with breeding organizations, the fund is expanding genomic selection tools for cattle and sheep. By integrating low-methane trait markers into national breeding indexes, livestock producers can gradually lower baseline herd emissions through selective breeding without compromising animal health, fertility, or feed conversion efficiency.

Market Dynamics and Strategic Relevance

The cash injection follows the regulatory repeal of New Zealand’s proposed direct agricultural emissions pricing scheme (formerly known as He Waka Eke Noa), shifting state strategy toward technology-led mitigation rather than financial penalties or herd reduction.

For international markets, AgriZeroNZ’s initiatives serve as a testing ground for pasture-based livestock emissions tools. Multinational dairy processors, meat buyers, and global veterinary pharma entities (such as Zoetis) are closely monitoring the enterprise to establish commercial rights and scalable manufacturing protocols for worldwide deployment.

“To protect our competitive edge in global export markets, we must provide farmers with practical, science-backed tools that cut emissions without hurting farm profitability,” noted key industry stakeholders during the announcement.
