European Medicines Agency (EMA) has recommended authorisation of Nobivac NXT HCPChFeLV, a feline vaccine that incorporates self-amplifying RNA (saRNA) technology for protection against feline leukaemia virus (FeLV).
The vaccine combines conventional live-attenuated vaccine components targeting feline herpesvirus type 1, feline calicivirus and feline panleukopenia virus, along with Chlamydia felis, while the FeLV component uses self-amplifying RNA packaged in a replication-deficient viral replicon particle.

A first for EU veterinary vaccines
EMA describes Nobivac NXT HCPChFeLV as the first veterinary vaccine recommended for EU authorisation containing self-amplifying RNA as an active substance.
The technology delivers RNA to cells, where it enables production of a target FeLV protein and stimulates an immune response.
EMA’s assessment considered 15 studies conducted in controlled facilities and one field study involving 142 cats. The agency reported adequate immune responses against the five targeted pathogens, with immunity beginning at approximately one week after vaccination. Duration of immunity is reported as three years for feline panleukopenia and one year for the other four components.
Why RNA technology matters
The significance extends beyond a single feline vaccine. Self-amplifying RNA has attracted substantial interest because it can potentially generate strong antigen expression from relatively small quantities of RNA. In veterinary medicine, the technology could eventually become relevant to pathogens where conventional vaccine development presents manufacturing, scalability or speed challenges.
The EU regulatory milestone therefore provides an important precedent for the clinical and regulatory validation of next-generation RNA vaccine platforms in animals.
Broader industry implications
The development may encourage veterinary vaccine developers to evaluate RNA technologies for:
-
companion-animal infectious diseases;
-
emerging pathogens;
-
livestock diseases;
-
rapid-response vaccines;
-
multivalent vaccine platforms.
