Indian Startup Big Nano Ventures Advances Rapid Livestock Pregnancy Diagnostics

Gujarat-based Big Nano Ventures has developed an early-pregnancy detection kit designed for cows, buffaloes, sheep and goats, offering farmers a potentially faster and less invasive approach to reproductive management.

The startup says its test can detect pregnancy at approximately 28–35 days after conception, with results available in less than 10 minutes. The technology has reportedly been used in more than 27,000 animals and has received national recognition.

From reproductive intervention to field diagnostics

Pregnancy detection is a critical component of livestock productivity because delayed identification of non-pregnant animals can extend calving intervals and increase feeding and management costs without generating corresponding milk or offspring output.

Early field-level detection can potentially help farmers and veterinarians make faster decisions concerning:

  • repeat breeding;

  • nutritional management;

  • veterinary intervention;

  • herd replacement;

  • breeding schedules;

  • calving management.

The startup was supported through the incubation ecosystem associated with Anand Agricultural University, reflecting the increasing role of Indian agricultural universities and incubators in translating livestock science into commercial diagnostic products.

Why this matters for India’s dairy sector

India’s enormous and geographically dispersed dairy population creates a substantial requirement for affordable, rapid and decentralised veterinary diagnostics.

Traditional reproductive diagnosis often depends on trained veterinary personnel and access to appropriate examination facilities. A rapid field test could complement these approaches by allowing earlier identification of animals requiring further veterinary assessment.

The reported deployment across more than 27,000 animals is particularly relevant because field adoption, rather than laboratory performance alone, is likely to determine the commercial value of livestock diagnostics.

Commercial opportunity

The technology sits within a broader Indian opportunity around: Rapid test → reproductive decision → shorter reproductive downtime → improved herd economics

Future commercial expansion could potentially involve dairy cooperatives, veterinary networks, artificial-insemination programmes, livestock extension systems and organised dairy farms.

However, independent validation of diagnostic sensitivity, specificity and performance across breeds, physiological stages and field conditions remains important before making broader claims about productivity impact.

AHI Analyst View

India’s livestock-health technology market is gradually moving toward point-of-care diagnostics, reducing dependence on central laboratories and bringing more decision-making closer to the farmer.

If the technology demonstrates robust diagnostic accuracy at scale, rapid pregnancy testing could become part of a broader digital and diagnostic reproductive-management ecosystem for Indian dairy and small-ruminant production.
