Virbac Launches Floragest in Europe – For Everyday Digestive Health in Dogs and Cats

Virbac has begun the phased European launch of Floragest, a new digestive-health product for dogs and cats combining prebiotics and postbiotics in a soft-chew format.

The launch reflects a broader shift in companion-animal health from treating digestive symptoms after they appear toward supporting the gut microbiome and intestinal ecosystem as part of routine preventive care.

The D.I.S. formulation

Floragest is built around Virbac’s proprietary Digestive Innovation Science (D.I.S.) concept. According to Virbac, the formulation combines:

Prebiotics

  • Baobab fruit pulp

  • Acacia gum

with:

Postbiotics

  • YANG®

  • Inactivated Lactobacillus helveticus HA-122

The prebiotics are intended to support beneficial bacteria already present in the gut, while postbiotics provide stable non-living microbial components and metabolites without requiring viable organisms to survive storage or gastrointestinal conditions.

Why postbiotics are gaining attention

Traditional probiotics rely on live microorganisms reaching the gastrointestinal tract in sufficient numbers.

Postbiotics take a different approach by using inactivated microbial preparations and their biologically active components.

Virbac highlights stability, ease of storage and compatibility with antibiotic treatment as advantages of its postbiotic approach. These are product-specific claims and should be distinguished from broader evidence around postbiotics as a category.

The 3–7–28 positioning

Virbac describes a staged response model based on its supporting studies:

  • Day 3: improvement in stool consistency

  • Day 7: improvements relating to digestive comfort

  • Day 28: broader microbiome and intestinal-health effects

Virbac reports that the product is supported by in-vitro, in-vivo and owner-perception research, including 2026 publications cited on its French product information page.

The company states that the product is designed for functional digestive disturbances including dietary transitions, soft stools, mild constipation and flatulence, as well as microbiome disruption associated with antibiotic use.

Commercial significance

The companion-animal microbiome market is moving beyond conventional “probiotic” positioning. The emerging category includes:

Prebiotics + Probiotics + Postbiotics + Synbiotics + Microbiome diagnostics + Therapeutic nutrition.

For veterinary businesses, this creates an opportunity to build longer-duration relationships around preventive digestive care rather than episodic treatment.

The product also fits the growing soft-chew / palatable administration trend, where compliance becomes an important part of product design.

Strategic / Analyst View

Floragest is strategically significant because it illustrates how major animal-health companies are expanding from pharmaceuticals into daily preventive and microbiome-oriented companion-animal care.

The commercial opportunity is not necessarily limited to gastrointestinal disease. Microbiome positioning can potentially connect digestive health with immunity, nutrition, skin health and overall wellbeing.

However, the strongest commercial differentiation will ultimately depend on independent evidence demonstrating meaningful clinical outcomes beyond microbiome or stool changes.

Bottom line

Virbac’s Floragest launch strengthens the trend toward microbiome-based preventive pet health, with prebiotic–postbiotic formulations emerging as an increasingly important alternative to traditional live-probiotic products.
